Krystal McLeod '12 has been selected to receive the Harry S. Truman Scholarship.  She currently is a junior at NYU. She is one of 58 exceptional college juniors from fifty U.S. colleges and universities who have been selected as 2015 Truman Scholars.

The Truman is a highly competitive, merit-based award offered to U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals from Pacific Islands who want to go to graduate school in preparation for a career in public service. Truman Scholars are persons who have been recognized by the Truman Scholarship Foundation as future "change agents."  They have the passion, intellect, and leadership potential that in time should enable them to improve the ways that public entities - be they government agencies, nonprofit organizations, public and private educational institutions, or advocacy organizations - serve the public good.

Krystal’s passion for education reform was developed at a young age after witnessing first-hand the educational disparities within her own household and community. Since then she has dedicated herself to reforming our nation’s current education model, using her experience with national nonprofits in the process. The culmination of her experiences as a Democracy Coach, Advisory Board Member and Community Change Fellowship Coordinator for Generation Citizen, and her role as United Nations Youth Representative for NGO World Education Fellowship, among others, equipped her with the tools necessary to found, create and manage her own education initiative, “My” Right to Learn.  She instituted this program for low income minority youth, taking into account the importance of developing mindful future leaders that in addition to academic competency, possess self-awareness and an understanding of the social and economic trends that affect their communities.
